Just because we see something doesn’t necessarily mean we understand it.
Our eyes perceive the surface: a face, a behavior, an event, a situation. But we are the ones who give it meaning through our own experiences, fears, beliefs and past. That is why two people can see the very same situation in completely different ways.
Where does what we actually see end, and where does what we add to it begin?
To truly understand, we need to look beyond what is visible. What led to this point? What is it that I still don’t know? What lies behind a person’s behavior? What larger context have I taken what I am seeing out of?
Seeing gives us information.
Interpretation turns it into a story.
Understanding looks for connections.
That is why judging too quickly can be dangerous. What we consider to be certain reality is often only the part of it that we are currently able to see from our own perspective.
Seeing is easy. Understanding takes work.
