For me, a solar eclipse is much more than simply waiting for a cosmic spectacle.
Knowing that something exists even though you cannot see it with your eyes — and yet it affects everything. If its light is too bright, you cannot see it because of that. If something hides it, then you cannot see it because of that.
The Moon covers the Sun.
That is all that happens before our eyes.
Does that mean it no longer exists? Does it cease to be? Does it lose its power?
It does not cease to exist simply because a shadow comes between us and it.
This goes far beyond a solar eclipse.
Our mind obscures the spirit.
That happens too.
What cannot be seen may still exist. It may still work. It may still have an effect.
A significant part of our lives is moved by forces we cannot see. We cannot see gravity. We cannot see a magnetic field. We cannot put our own thoughts on the table. Love has no shape either. And yet it would be rather difficult to claim that none of these has an effect.
Or is there no such thing as love?
When do we turn towards what we normally cannot see?
Only when such a great shadow falls across it that suddenly we notice its absence?
Perhaps we do the same thing with ourselves.
The Sun shines on us, and we take its presence for granted. Sometimes we even complain about when, how much and where it should shine. Because we know everything
(better), of course....
When loss comes, a collapse, an illness, a breakup, or a life situation in which the world we know suddenly goes dark for a few moments — or even for years — we begin searching for the light, for what lies beyond the visible.
Who are you? Why are you here? What is the purpose of life? Who or what is guiding it? What remains when everything that once seemed natural disappears — everything upon which you had built your life until then? Who are you without all of it?
How dark does it have to become before you finally begin to see and value what you only look up to when it is in shadow?
Eventually, everything comes full circle.
Like the ring of the Sun.
You do not have to wait for a total (solar) eclipse for that.
